White Paper to inform, educate, treat: towards a participatory and integrated model of Italian alcology
From epidemiological data released by the World Health Organization, alcohol is considered the fifth risk factor for the global disease burden. In the 30 countries of the European Union, 5.5% of all deaths were caused by alcohol, largely from oncological diseases (29% of alcohol-related deaths), liver cirrhosis (20%), cardiovascular disease (19%), road accidents and acts of self-harm and interpersonal violence (28%).
By now unfortunately the direct and indirect damage to health caused by the harmful consumption of alcohol is well known, we know that biological damage is associated with damage caused by irresponsible behavior that leads to violent actions, fatal or disabling accidents, without neglecting the repercussions in the workplace, family and social that follow. To the risks and damages mentioned above must be added the costs incurred for social and health care and for the community, as well as productivity losses
