Rome, 21 Mar. (Adnkronos Salute) — Italy is the second country in the world, preceded by the USA and followed by Belgium and Great Britain, leading research on patients with disorders of conscience. The role of Italian specialists and centers in national and international research on disorders of consciousness and severe acquired brain injuries was the focus, today in Milan, of the national conference organized by the Coma Research Centre of the Fondazione Irccs Istituto neurologico Carlo Besta. The conference received greetings from the Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci who — reports a note — will receive in Rome all the presidents of scientific societies and family members and patients to listen and define with them the next steps on the subject.
On the research front, the number of scientific articles on the subject, worldwide, published in the last 10 years — remember dal Besta — follows a fluctuating trend, but constantly growing, reaching almost 2,000 publications in 10 years with a peak of over 220 articles published in 2018. The Italian commitment to diagnosis, treatment, assistance and research on patients with disorders of conscience — continues the note — is evidenced by the 7 new projects that concern both the acute and chronic phases. In particular, the projects presented today during the conference present innovations in diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic fields through multiple approaches.Thousands of patients will benefit from the results of these projects, given the annual incidence rate of people with disorders of consciousness disorders of 1.8-1.9/100,000 inhabitants.
«Our Foundation has always worked in a translational way on all neurological diseases: we care about the interaction with both the political-administrative components and with the scientific and patient components. Today in Milan many voices have joined to ask that attention on patients and families remains high, having very clear that the excellence of Italian research always needs support and support to remain at high levels», said the president of the Irccs Besta Foundation, Andrea Gambini.
