Cholera Global Update
Note on epidemic events abroad
Since 2021, there has been an increase in cholera cases and their geographical distribution globally. In 2021, 23 countries reported cholera outbreaks, mainly in the WHO’s Africa and Eastern Mediterranean Regions. This trend continued in 2022 with more than 29 countries reporting cholera cases or outbreaks. As of , 16 of these countries have reported prolonged outbreaks. Many of these countries reported a higher number of cases and a higher fatality rate (CFR) than in previous years. The average cholera CFR reported globally in 2021 was 1.9% (2.9% in Africa), well above the acceptable level (<1%) and the highest recorded in over a decade.
Cholera cases and cholera-associated deaths have increased globally this year after years of decline. Of particular concern are outbreaks in 13 countries, which reported no cases of cholera in 2021. Of these, some have not reported cholera outbreaks for many years (between 3 and 30) and many are not considered cholera-endemic countries1,2. The current situation represents a resurgence of the ongoing seventh cholera pandemic, which began in 1961.
