Epidemiological surveillance of infectious diseases

Epidemiological surveillance of infectious diseases

ARS Report November 2022

At the time this Report on the Surveillance of Infectious Diseases in Tuscany is published, almost three years have passed since the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic began. The path that has characterized the evolution of the virus in this period of time seems to be under control, mainly thanks on the one hand to the impact that the Covid-19 vaccination has had on reducing the number of serious cases of the disease, on the other hand to the arrival about a year ago of the Omicron variant of the virus, more transmissive but less severe.

The attempt we operate with this document is to try to understand the impact of Covid-19 on the spread of other infectious diseases in Tuscany through the analysis of data on cases notified in the two-year period of the 2020-2021 pandemic.Trying to summarize the main facts that emerged from the analysis, there is a general reduction in infections, mainly driven by respiratory diseases, which more than others have benefited from the actions taken to counteract the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, in particular the use of the mask, distancing and frequent hand washing.
